Trieste and Venice: Two Gems of Italy

September 3, 2024

Sometimes the most economical way to travel from one country to another is via a third country and we try to take advantage of that fact and see a few more cities and countries.  That's how we got to spend a few days in Croatia before heading to Slovenia and how we got two delightful days in Italy before flying to Spain.

First up was Trieste, a port city that happens to be the capital of Friuli Veniezia Guilia region of northern Italy.  It occupies a thin strip of land between the Adriatic Coast and the Slovenian border.  We were all a bit exhausted from our week of hard work in Slovenia so we let the kids chill in the apartment while Francesca and I wandered the city for an afternoon stroll.

Later that evening we mustered up the energy to go out for a delicious Italian meal in the main square.

The following day the kids walked around the neighborhood a little bit until it was time to take the train to Venice.

We only had about 6 hours in Venice before we needed to take the bus to the ariport to catch our flight to Bilbao, Spain, but we vowed to make the most of it.  We dropped our heavy bags off at a luggage storage facility and then, traveling significantly lighter, we made our way from the train station to Piazza San Marco, stopping along the way to get ice cream, window shop and have lunch.

It was short, but sweet....and super hot!  But all things considered, it wasn't as crowded as everyone had told us it would be and we thoroughly enjoyed wandering - and getting lost - in the alleys and canals of Venice.
